dance workshops: what to expect
ivivva is behind-the-scenes at the Pulse dance workshop in New York this week. We’re meeting some incredible dancers and choreographers – and learning a ton about what happens at an intense dance workshop like this!
Here’s the real deal on what you should expect when you’re going to a big dance workshop – the stuff they don’t tell you on the brochure!
1. The “schedule” never stays the same.
Be prepared to go with the flow because even the published schedule doesn’t always stay the same. You will also have very little time in between classes so you have to stay on top of all of the changes and know what’s next.
This is especially the case if you get selected to do something “extra” like yesterday when Emily, one of our fav dancers, was selected to be in the closing number (a big honour!) –> so we had to take the intermediate schedule and the closing number rehearsal schedule and re-write the whole thing into one big pretty intense schedule!
2. Plan your meals + snacks.
You need to figure out when in the day you will be able to grab a bite and what to eat. For example yesterday Emily didn’t have a break from 2-10pm so we brought a smoothie to try and drink in between classes.
3. Know your rooms.
You have zero time to figure out where you’re going so it’s a best practice to come scope out the rooms early so you don’t get lost in the crowds of people when those doors fly open at the end of a class.
4. Be the first one out of class.
If you need to get anything done between classes (like use the bathroom) you need to be first out of the door at the end of class or you won’t have time to do it.
5. Don’t overpack.
With all of the shopping you’re doing at the event booths and in the cities, you will need to have room in your luggage to get it all home. (Unless of course you buy a new bag!
)
6. Bring lots of sports bras.
After 8 hours of dance, you’re not going to want to wear the same sweaty bra again tomorrow.
7. Bring your phone.
The easiest way to make friends and remember their names etc is to add them to your phone asap when you meet them.
That’s it for now girls! Stay tuned as we post behind-the-scenes images on Facebook, Instagram + on the blog! Ask us – or Emily! – any questions you have about the Pulse and we will try to answer them quickly!
This is Emily hitting a check mark on the streets of New York.
